Here are the highlights of Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı’s statements:

Compensation efforts will continue

“There is no curfew in Diyarbakır and schools are not closed. Curfew continues in six neighborhoods in Sur district but students living in these areas are enrolled in schools located in other neighborhoods. Education continues at Mardin and Nusaybin. You know that some of the children failed to enter the Transition from Primary to Secondary Education Exams. Curfew continues in Şırnak, Silopi and Cizre. As soon as life normalizes in the region, our ministry will compensate the loss period. We are obliged to provide 180 work days of education to every student according to law and we will fulfill our responsibility within this framework.”

No strikes at schools

Some labor unions are hanging banners such as, “There is a strike in this workplace.” Schools are not places to go on a strike. We have started an investigation against such attempts.”

Exam dates of the regions will not be changed

“There is no plan to change the exam dates set for the region. Exams will take place on the same day in the whole of the country. We will give remedial courses and prepare our children at the region for the exams.”

Security measures increased at schools

“I want to thank all security forces personnel who worked in an effort to keep our schools open. They are making an extra effort. Security measures in order to protect the schools have increased. I also want to thank our teachers who have been working making great sacrifices.”

We called teachers to come to center

“There are some speculations about teachers who were called to central areas for in-service training during the curfew in Silopi and Cizre. They did not abandon their students. We called them to come to the center. We had to take measures to protect our personnel.”

Schools at California were closed for a day, too

“Schools were off in California and Los Angeles on the day we called for a recess in Silopi and Cizre. 640.000 students did not go to school for a whole week in Los Angeles after police received a tip about a possible bomb attack against schools.

Schools are not just buildings

“Terror aims at intimidating people and children and sick people are easy targets for them. You might recall that the terrorist organization had destroyed many school buildings during  the 6-7 October incidents. We repaired these building and reopened them. We have been witnessing attacks against not only school buildings but also against courses that were initiated in order to teach profession to the people of the region. Our security forces are taking great care to prevent any harm to the people living in the region and the people are aware of the sacrifices the state is making in order to protect them.”

Appointment of 30.000 teachers

“Appointments of 30.000 teachers will be made in February and they will start getting their salaries by then. These newly appointed teachers will go through an orientation program guided by senior teachers. These senior teachers will also serve as advisors.”

“Teachers appointed to Eastern and Southeastern regions might apply for reappointment due to several reasons such as their health conditions and security concerns. We have to find a solution for that. It is important for them to serve at least four years in these regions and we will initiate some measures to make this possible.”

Even the slightest information may make our teachers work easier

“We want parents to become more involved with school activities. We want them to participate in parent teacher meetings. This will allow them to have firsthand information about their children’s performance at school. We want our teachers and parents to have a special bond for the benefit of our students. They might see what any shortcomings that we might have neglected.  Even the vslightest information may make our teachers work easier.”

No homework at the holiday

“We have warned teachers not to give homework during the semester holiday. We are also aware that teachers are giving too much homework during the school year. Due to this reason, we are working on a project in order to decrease the homework load of students.”
